Temporary Internet Access in Thailand, Status April 2001 Visitors can get instant dial-up Internet access at Loxinfo (http://www.loxinfo.com/). What I value about Loxinfo is that their support speaks some English and their site can be viewed with normal (American) software, other Thai ISPs require that you learn Thai and use Thai Win98 with matching browser. Ordering is online or by buying a package in a shop. The online order is processed within 1 day, often just 1 or 2 hours. Shops sell exactly the same package at a lower price, up to THB100 below the online price. Support staff from the hotline speaks English, is on standby 24h and fairly competent. The system is up most of the time and access is rarely a problem. Cost: 45 hours = THB750 (best market price THB650) 25 hours = THB500 Maximum connect speed is 56K. One gets WWW-access and can use the Loxinfo SMTP server for outgoing mail. For incoming mail, one uses any existing account. Usage time can be checked online. If used up, one simply buys a new package. If no access for a complete year after first use, the account gets deleted without refund. Note: When dealing with Thai businesses, be aware that English documentation is considered a decorative item to give an international feel. It is usually completely wrong or at least not updated. If you need reliable information, let's say about DNS or dial-in numbers, call them ! ---------- Notes on Telephone in Thailand: National long-distance calls are surprisingly expensive. If you have to call long-distance, try to find someone with a handphone and pay him rather than using a public phone. Many international telephone services in Khao Sarn Rd use Internet to transmit the calls. eof
